Lookaway Data Migration

Greetings Lookaway Members and site visitors. Earlier this week, in an unprecedented move, cloud IT services provider Amazon Web Services, purged and locked an account that hosted a very popular and new social media platform. They were not given any notice or opportunity for appeal or other recourse.

It is my understanding that there were many far-right members of this service and that the move was 100% politically motivated.

I will take this opportunity to clear the air here. This site and the Membership as a whole do not collectively belong to any political affiliation or group. Lookaway Information is not a political website. In this day and age, there are few subjects that don't bump right up against some kind of political issue, so naturally, politics will be addressed on the site from time to time. Politics is not off limits and there is no political messaging template to follow. Be free to speak your mind while bearing in mind that all speech, even non-political speech, has real world consequences whether we like it or not.

Myself and other individual Members, of course, have our own unique beliefs and preferences when it comes to politics. We are totally allowed to express that on our platform in anyway we see fit.

Things we should know about the changes to Lookaway Information:

All data is now housed in a single geographic location on a set of redundant disks. This means that if the server is physically destroyed ( like in a fire, flood, theft, etc ) our data is gone.

Local power and Internet service outages will cause the site to become unavailable until service is restored.

If the site starts getting too many requests for large files, I will need require a login to reach the site content. Hopefully, if this starts to happen, people will donate and I will perhaps be able to move the site to a trusted colocation data center locally. The only thing stopping me from doing this now is money. It will cost around $300 per month, and a $5000 outlay for equipment.

I totally understand if this is a deal breaker for any current Members. It takes a lot of time and effort to find, format, index, tag and curate your work. Thanks again to everyone who has joined and supported me. Let's see what happens.

Update 01/18/21: Looks like the site is running great from the new server! Expect lots of new improvements in an upcoming update.
