I used to use time.gov for various things back before smartphones came out. The site was solid and always up, way better than other sites with ads and popups, but the site layout sucked balls. I just went to go check the time using time.gov for the first time in a while and was pleasantly surprised.
The site is operated by NIST. It uses the NTP (Network Time Protocol). The master clock for the secondary and tertiary NTP servers which provide the time for nearly all computers on earth is actually an array of 90 atomic clocks on a US Naval vessel somewhere in the ocean.
NIST promotes U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.
